Campbell #3 Project

MPPA's first project includes ten cities:

    Bay City
  Charlevoix

  Chelsea
  Harbor Springs

  Hart
  Holland

  Lowell

Petoskey
  Portland
  Traverse City

The J.H. Campbell Generating Station No. 3 enables the MPPA to provide its members with economical energy generation and delivery.

MPPA owns a 4.8% undivided interest in the coal-fired J.H. Campbell Generating Station No. 3, which is located on Lake Michigan between Holland and Grand Haven. Consumers Energy operates Campbell No. 3, which provides the MPPA with the necessary economy of scale to affordably meet its power supply needs.

To provide for the economical delivery of power from Campbell No. 3 to participating agencies, MPPA obtained ownership rights in Consumers Energy’s
electric transmission facilities.

Because of excellent maintenance and an aggressive fuel-purchasing program, Campbell No. 3 is the MPPA’s most economical power resource. MPPA provides its customers with reliable, clean, and efficient energy.

Eventually, with continued pro-active plant management dedicated to the substantial reduction of operating costs and the 2009 retirement of bonds will make Campbell No. 3 one of Michigan’s best energy resources, providing reliable, low cost electricity.  J.H. Campbell Generating Station No. 3

Over the years the plant has had several upgrades and repairs.  Some of the more notable are NOx compliance modifications,  turbine overhaul in 2000 including a new high pressure turbine, the rebuilding of all three low pressure stages were rebuilt in 2002, and a new distributed control system was installed in 2002.
